Eltville, Germany
|
Observations from a visit in September, 1998, Lynda Ollenburger Sangster.
Germany's B54 comes from the north and ends at the Rhine river, near Wiesbaden, after having wound its way through Bad Marienberg, Bad Schwaltbach, and Schlangenbad, for B54 is Germany's Badstraße. This is an area where Germans go when they want to be restored by heated natural waters. They go to enjoy the Kur. |
At the road's end
at the Rhine lies Eltville, one village from which Ollenburgers are known
to have come in the late 1700's. Eltville is in the middle of wine-growing
country and the hillsides as far as can be seen are covered with vineyards.
Rhine wine is famous the world over. |
Eltville now is a stadt, a sort of area center. Eltville now includes within its boundaries
several of the smaller surrounding villages. Each village is very small in
itself, but over the years they've grown together, so it's impossible to
tell by sight where one village ends and another begins. |
Like most of Germany's
villages, this area is beautifully maintained. Many of the buildings are
very old, but it's often difficult to detect new construction because great
care is taken to keep the traditional look. |
One example of keeping
the old intact was the small road we were travelling. One half was cobbled
with the characteristic German "fan" cobbling, while the other half was tarmac.
Maybe they had to lay a sewer pipe or something, but I prefer to think the
locals just couldn't give up the beautiful road when they had to widen it! |
